1- HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL
1. Basic History
Invention: Invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a Physical Education teacher in Holyoke, Massachusetts
. Purpose: To create a physical activity for young people and adults where men and women could play together without the physical contact or aggression found in other sports
. Evolution: Originally called "Mintonette," it was renamed "Volleyball" by Dr. Halstead to reflect the nature of the game (ball-volley)
. International Growth: It spread to Canada in 1900, the Philippines in 1910, and arrived in Europe in 1917 via American soldiers during World War I
. Recognition: The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was founded in 1947
. It became an Olympic sport at the Tokyo 1964 Games . Beach Volleyball was introduced at the Atlanta 1996 Games .
- Federation: The Spanish Volleyball Federation was officially created in 1959
.
2- PHILOSOPHIES AND DIFFERENTIATING CHARACTERISTICS
Practicing Philosophies
Recreational: As originally intended by Morgan for leisure
. School-based: Recommended by UNESCO for harmonic physical development and socialization
. Competitive: Practiced under official rules with structured training
. Beach Volleyball: Including official 2x2 and 4x4 modalities
. Mini-Volleyball: Adapted for children aged 8-10
.
Key Characteristics
No physical contact (separated by the net)
. The ball cannot be held; it must be hit
. Maximum of three contacts per team; a single player cannot hit the ball twice in a row
. Players rotate positions upon regaining the serve, preventing over-specialization
.
3- RULES OF THE GAME
1. The Court
Dimensions: 18m long by 9m wide
. Lines: Divided by a center line. Attack lines are 3m from the center line
. All lines are 5cm wide . Ceiling Height: Minimum 7m for standard play and 12.5m for major international competitions
.
2. The Net and Posts
Height: 2.43m for men and 2.24m for women
. Dimensions: 9.5m long and 1m wide
. Antennae: Two 1.80m rods placed above the sidelines to delimit the crossing space
.
3. The Ball
Weight: 260 – 280 grams
. Circumference: 65 – 67 cm
.
4. The Team and Scoring
Composition: Maximum 15 members (up to 12 players), with a minimum of 6 players on the court
. Scoring (Sets): A set is won by the first team to reach 15 points (with a 2-point lead). In the first four sets, a team must win the serve to score.
4- TECHNICAL SKILLS (GESTURES)
The Serve (Saque)
Defined as an offensive element to score directly or disrupt the opponent's play
. Types: Underhand (safety), Tennis (power or floating), and Jump serves
. Rules: The server must stand in the back-right zone (ZD) and has 5 seconds to serve after the whistle
.
The Pass (Toque de dedos / Pases)
The "Finger Touch" involves contacting the ball with the pads of the fingers (10 phalanges) in a "cup" shape above the face
. Variations: Forward, backward, and lateral passes
