VOLLEYBALL SPORT:

1- HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL

1. Basic History

  • Invention: Invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, a Physical Education teacher in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

  • Purpose: To create a physical activity for young people and adults where men and women could play together without the physical contact or aggression found in other sports.

  • Evolution: Originally called "Mintonette," it was renamed "Volleyball" by Dr. Halstead to reflect the nature of the game (ball-volley).

  • International Growth: It spread to Canada in 1900, the Philippines in 1910, and arrived in Europe in 1917 via American soldiers during World War I.

  • Recognition: The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) was founded in 1947. It became an Olympic sport at the Tokyo 1964 Games. Beach Volleyball was introduced at the Atlanta 1996 Games.

  • Federation: The Spanish Volleyball Federation was officially created in 1959.

2- PHILOSOPHIES AND DIFFERENTIATING CHARACTERISTICS

Practicing Philosophies:

  1. Recreational: As originally intended by Morgan for leisure.

  2. School-based: Recommended by UNESCO for harmonic physical development and socialization.

  3. Competitive: Practiced under official rules with structured training.

  4. Beach Volleyball: Including official 2x2 and 4x4 modalities.

  5. Mini-Volleyball: Adapted for children aged 8-10.

Key Characteristics:

  • No physical contact (separated by the net).

  • The ball cannot be held; it must be hit.

  • Maximum of three contacts per team; a single player cannot hit the ball twice in a row.

  • Players rotate positions upon regaining the serve, preventing over-specialization.

3- RULES OF THE GAME

1. The Court

  • Dimensions: 18m long by 9m wide.

  • Lines: Divided by a center line. Attack lines are 3m from the center line. All lines are 5cm wide.

  • Ceiling Height: Minimum 7m for standard play and 12.5m for major international competitions.

2. The Net and Posts

  • Height: 2.43m for men and 2.24m for women.

  • Dimensions: 9.5m long and 1m wide.

  • Antennae: Two 1.80m rods placed above the sidelines to delimit the crossing space.

3. The Ball

  • Weight: 260 – 280 grams.

  • Circumference: 65 – 67 cm.

4. The Team and Scoring

  • Composition: Maximum 15 members (up to 12 players), with a minimum of 6 players on the court.

  • Scoring (Sets): A set is won by the first team to reach 15 points (with a 2-point lead). In the first four sets, a team must win the serve to score.

4- TECHNICAL SKILLS (GESTURES)

The Serve (Saque):

  • Defined as an offensive element to score directly or disrupt the opponent's play.

  • Types: Underhand (safety), Tennis (power or floating), and Jump serves.

  • Rules: The server must stand in the back-right zone (ZD) and has 5 seconds to serve after the whistle.

The Pass (Toque de dedos / Pases):

  • The "Finger Touch" involves contacting the ball with the pads of the fingers (10 phalanges) in a "cup" shape above the face.

  • Variations: Forward, backward, and lateral passes.
